INTRODUCTION

The development goal of TOMEI's PONCAM camshaft was "New performance at every stage".
Therefore, we aimed to create a camshaft that would give the engine a certain character or give the engine the power feeling that TOMEI envisioned, without relying on settings after installation. Unlike camshafts with a
wide action angle and high lift that give engines special and partial characteristics, PONCAM performs as a tuning camshaft in all driving situations, while providing smooth output characteristics and quick response that is required in today's tuning scene. In addition, we have created a camshaft that does not cause stress to the user, such as unstable idling when installed as a tuning camshaft.

Valve timing adjusted

Valve timing is the timing of valve opening and closing relative to the piston movement, and is generally expressed as the crank angle from the top dead center or bottom dead center of the piston. When replacing the cam, the engine characteristics such as engine rotation stability and low and medium speed torque change dramatically by adjusting the overlap and valve closing timing by 1° increments. There is an appropriate value for this timing depending on the engine load and rotation speed, and it is generally adjusted to the driver's requirements by the engine tuner's hand and actual driving tests.
PONCAM is a model that selects the optimal duration and valve lift from the torque characteristics and acceleration data from a huge amount of tests on engine benches and actual driving, and is manufactured by calculating the appropriate valve timing and shifting the knock pin position in advance. If you replace it with a normal one, it will match the appropriate valve timing and no valve timing adjustment is required. We have made the potential of tuning engines and driving pleasure widely available to the general public.

Easy installation

Not only is it easy to install with the lash adjuster type, but even with solid types such as the RB26, we have achieved ultra-high precision in the cam base circle dimensions, making shim adjustment almost unnecessary.

No need to replace with stronger valve springs

In the camshaft profile design, we have succeeded in significantly reducing the load on the valve springs by increasing the acceleration on the opening side and decreasing the acceleration on the closing side. If the genuine valve springs are normal when the cam is installed, there is no need to replace the valve springs.

All-round performance

  PONCAM's biggest development goal is high performance in all ranges. In the conventional tuning scene, there was a tendency to focus on power at high revolutions, but a tuning car should be comfortable and fast from low revolutions to high revolutions. Therefore, PONCAM conducted tests on engine benches and actual driving for each vehicle model, and developed the car with the aim of improving performance in all ranges. As a result, we succeeded in combining smooth output characteristics and agile response in all ranges.

Outstanding acceleration performance

At TOMEI, we install an acceleration sensor on an actual vehicle and perform acceleration tests when replacing the cams.
As a result of the tests, we were able to achieve a quick acceleration response by designing an appropriate cam profile and providing a moderate overlap. By installing PONCAM, the turbine response improves in turbo cars and the boost rises faster, and even in naturally aspirated cars, the acceleration performance improves significantly due to improved combustion efficiency at low revolutions.

*The table shows the S14 (SR20DET) with PONCAM TYPE R installed. As you can see, a significant improvement in acceleration is achieved compared to the stock version.

Stable idling

PONCAM has a stable idling due to the appropriate duration, lift amount, overlap amount and thorough stable profile design. Stable idling prevents engine stall and hunting.

Effective use of variable valve timing

The variable valve timing system is a system that allows efficient combustion by changing the opening and closing timing of the intake valve according to the engine speed (NVCS in Nissan vehicles, etc.). As a result, while high power is obtained at high speeds, large torque and low fuel consumption are achieved at low and medium speeds. In order to make the most of
its high performance, TOMEI-PONCAM is set to valve timing that calculates the movement of the variable valve timing, and the synergistic effect with the variable valve timing makes it possible to stabilize idling and increase power from low to high speeds with just a simple installation.

The above table and graph show variable valve timing and a fixed duration used in variable valve timing. IN126° is a valve timing that achieves stable idling and extended high RPM range. 106° is a valve timing that achieves increased torque in the low and mid RPM range. Variable valve timing is an ideal system that incorporates the best of both worlds.

The development goal of PONCAM is to improve performance in all areas. In drifting, the drift angle is controlled by subtle throttle work, but by installing PONCAM, the engine responds more immediately to the throttle, increasing controllability. It also makes it possible to increase the entry speed, and increases the angle and distance.

  If you install a pop-on turbine using a stock cam, you will not get enough exhaust combustion gas to fully utilize the larger turbine, and low and medium speed torque will tend to decrease. PONCAM has conducted many matching tests with various turbines, and has made it possible to make the larger turbine's supercharging start up faster, obtain quick response, and utilize the turbine up to high revolutions. PONCAM is effective when changing to a pop-on turbine such as the TOMEI ARMS series.

  All PONCAM valves are set to the appropriate valve timing, but you can change the valve timing to further suit your needs. Previously, adjusting the valve timing required a lot of time and effort, but with PONCAM, the initial valve timing value is clear, so you can easily change the valve timing and change the characteristics by matching it to the scale on the adjustable cam gear. Another reason to choose PONCAM is that you can change the characteristics to suit your riding style.
